Statshot: More Than 10 Million Wiis Sold in 2008
Despite my addiction to The Age of Empires (and the rest of the franchise), I’m not much of a gamer. Nevertheless, last year a friend of mine let me borrow his Nintendo Wii and after a couple of hours spent playing some of its simpler games, I was hooked. Apparently I’m not alone, for nearly […]
Sony Phone Home for Gaming Future

For Sony, Home is where the future of gaming is — or where they would like it to be.
In its battle for the hearts and minds of gamers, Sony is developing a robust social-networking component to its PlayStation 3 console.
The new element, to be called Home, has been in beta testing for weeks and allows users to explore an online world with avatars that can travel from one virtual place to another.
While it’s not exactly a world like World of Warcraft or Linden Labs’Second Life, Home is the most ambitious push by any console maker into creating a virtual world for gamers.
It will live or die on whether it’s simple, fun, and deep enough for gamers who have plenty of other things they want to do — like play games. And the price is right: free for those who have a PS3.

Xbox 360 as Internet-to-TV Portal
Hoping to provide viewers with an easy way to move Internet-based video onto TV screens, GridNetworks has announced a new service that would do just that by routing the content through an Xbox 360 gaming console.
The service is designed to work with any device that uses Universal Plug and Play protocols and, in the future, GridNetworks wants to be able to use Sony’s PlayStation 3 as the conduit as well.

Life Got You Down? Buy a Video Game Console
Despite a worsening economy, all three current-generation video game consoles had better U.S. sales in October than they did a year ago, according to the latest figures from The NPD Group.
And both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii sold more units in October, a four-week reporting period, than in September, a five-week period. Wowwee!
Also the worst of the economic bad news had yet to hit in September.
Sony, however, saw month-over-month PlayStation 3 sales decline, while sales of its previous generation (and less expensive) PlayStation 2 remained strong. Also, the PS3 saw the strongest year-over-year sales increase in October.
Nintendo was again the market leader, even though Microsoft cut prices on its Xbox 360 line in September, making its low-end model the least-expensive console on the market.

Less Merry Xmas: Sony Keeping PS3 Pricing As Is
Sony has ruled out cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 console before Christmas, insisting that the PS3 is better value than rivals half its price.
(Maybe time to rethink that in today’s — or at least last week’s — economy?)
With up to 50% of video game sales made in the run-up to Christmas, Sony is gambling that despite the weak economy, consumers will not just buy the cheapest machine.
If they do, Sony could lose further ground to Nintendo’s Wii and to Microsoft’s entry-level Xbox 360, which sells for $199 in the U.S. after a price cut in September - half the $399 cost of the cheapest PS3.
Sony argues that the basic Xbox has no hard disk drive, while the PS3 plays High-Definition Blu-ray movies as standard.
Sony launched its third PlayStation model in the line in November 2006. The PS3 competes most directly with the Xbox 360. Both are high-powered consoles that have sold well to gaming enthusiasts, but neither has matched the casual appeal and rapid success of the much cheaper Wii.

After Microsoft dropped the prices of the XBox360 I really expectd Sony to follow suit but they must have enough faith (and money) to keep these prices.

You would have thought, that with XBox 360s being lowered in prices, that they would have lowered the prices too for Chritmas?
GTA IV for PC To Feature Expanded Multiplayer System
Gamers will see the release of Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) for their platform of choice this fall. Game developer Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two have announced that the popular title will hit store shelves on Nov. 18.
Naturally, gameplay in GTA IV will be a little different on the PC than it is on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, principally because gamers often use keyboards and mice instead of specialized controllers.
However, Rockstar is adding what it calls a newly expanded multiplayer system just for the PC.
One of the big draws for PC gaming is multiplayer, so if they can create a unique PC-oriented multiplayer experience, it could pull more people in. If it’s something substantially different, and it’s great, it could even convince some of the people who bought the console version to buy the PC version just for the multiplayer.
Wait and see …

Sony PS3 Boo-Boo …
Can’t believe stuff like this still happens!
Can’t anybody here play this game!
Sony
has been forced to pull the 2.40 version of the PlayStation 3 software from download servers because of complaints that the new update was causing problems for the owners of the console. It was only available for an hour, but apparently caused enough mayhem that Sony pulled the plug.
Bad news — they sent it out that way.
Good news — they acted really, really fast to stem to damage.
Read more about it at ZDNet.

PlayStation 3 helps discover oil
The technology used in the PlayStation 3 is being used to help explore and find oil much faster than before. Woohoo! ![]()
Using IBM technology, specifically the IBM PowerXCell 8i, which was originally developed for the Sony Playstation, a Spanish Oil company reports that specialized “Cell” microprocessors are speeding the search for oil and natural gas reserves located 30,000 feet below the Gulf of Mexico up to 6 times faster than current technology. Repsol and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center are using a process known as Reverse Time Migration (RTM), a sophisticated subsurface imaging tool accepted by the oil industry. It has proven essential for imaging
areas of complex subsurface geological structure, such as the rich hydrocarbon provinces of the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, offshore Brazil and West Africa. These basins are the new frontiers in oil
exploration, where significant oil reserves are present below thick masses
of salt that have made seismic imaging difficult. But the new technology
will accelerate and streamline oil and gas exploration in these promising regions by several orders of magnitude compared to current industry
methods.
Great! Now we just need to network up the millions of PS3s around the world to assist in oil exploration and we’ll have this high oil price problem licked in no time!
Of course, just because we find it doesn’t mean we can ‘drill’ for it. Darned extreme environmentalists! Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf of Mexico and last I checked not a drop of oil was spilled by any of the oil platforms in the Gulf. And don’t get me started on ANWR and offshore oil drilling.
Anyway, the project is sponsored by oil and gas company Repsol and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service estimates that these ultra deep Gulf waters holds approximately 56 billion barrels of oil equivalent (oil and natural gas), which, at $130/barrel, would be worth over $7 trillion and would meet the entire U.S. demand for oil and gas for about five years.
Sounds too good to be true, especially with the Democratic party blocking any attempts to drill for oil in U.S. territories. Then again, it’s a Spanish company doing the oil drilling and not the U.S., which apparently is beholden to extreme enviro-wacko views even though the vast majority of Americans want us to drill. Heck, even the Chinese will be drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. ABTUSACD (Anybody But The USA Can Drill) apparently. Well, if you believe oil is bad and causing global warming, I have news for you — China and other countries are doing to drill off the coast of the U.S. anyway.
Check out the funny The No Zone chart displayed on the U.S. Senator floor to show Congressional stonewalling.

PS3 Movie Downloads Coming
So
who will be the winner — the ruler — of the home entertainment (media) center battle royale?
Sony is making a strong bid — and why not with its history? — using the PlayStation 3 as the centerpiece of their strategy.
According to Engadget, Sony will make a movie download service available to US PlayStation 3 owners this summer — Japan and Europe at later dates with details coming “next month,” presumably at E3.
Of course, we already knew that Sony was prepped to deliver full-length TV shows and movies sometime in 2008 via its North American PlayStation Network. But summer, eh?
It would be good if someone could make this type of service really, really appealing — nothing out there gets me really excited — except for the overall concept.
And now with the price of gas making dedicated trips to the video store even less appealing (does anyone still do that Blockbuster?), then this has got to be the next killer app.
