AT&T Creates Private CDN for Corporate Video
Starting today, enterprise customers can get all the bandwidth for high-definition video they need from AT&T, which has launched a private content delivery service for video inside company firewalls. The explosion of video inside corporate networks is straining resources, according to the carrier. But unlike the tiered service that AT&T is experimenting with for its […]
Cloud Storage Could Mean Fat Pipes For All
Streaming HD video may be clogging up the last mile in homes, but in an enterprise setting, it’s not Vin Diesel flicks that are the problem — it’s larger and more important data being stored in the cloud. Medical records containing radiographic scans or genomic data for cancer research are transferred from corporate offices […]
Qwest Looks to Sell Long-Haul Network
Qwest Communications, the regional telephone provider, is looking to sell its long-haul network, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal. The company, which has $14 billion in debt, wants to continue its consumer last-mile business, which serves 11.6 million customers. However, without a wireless business (Qwest resells Verizon Wireless) the nation’s third-largest phone […]
Level 3 Has The Largest IP Network
Level 3 stock might be trading below a buck, and their future might be cloudy, but the company has to be thrilled with this news from Renesys, an Internet monitoring company that they are the largest IP network in the world, ahead of Sprint, which apparently just can’t get a break, even though they […]
Level 3 Lays Off 450
As the recession deepens and the telecommunications industry braces for some tough quarters, Level 3 said yesterday it will lay off 450 U.S. employees — or 8 percent of its work force. The reduction affects employees at all levels, will take place before the end of the year, and will result in a restructuring […]
DarkStrand Launches to Commercialize National Lambda Rail
DarkStrand, a three-year-old startup that won the right to offer commercial businesses access to the federally created National LambdaRail in June, will offer Fortune 500 companies access to fat pipes and compete with some of the larger companies. The goal of offering businesses their own fiber transport is nothing new, but still it adds another […]
Wholesale Internet Bandwidth Prices Keep Falling
Sure it is not like the early 2000s when those crooks from Enron were driving the prices of bandwidth down into the ground, but even today prices on Internet Bandwidth continue to fall. If you are a consumer, there is a good chance you are wondering what is Om talking about: after all broadband service […]
Will Credit Crunch Hit Silicon Valley?
San Francisco Bay Area, it seems is living in a protective cocoon of its own, oblivious to the current credit crunch and fiscal crisis that has been roiling rest of America. This morning, while there is is talk of a bailout plan being finalized, it hasn’t stopped almost everyone from cab drivers to […]
Level 3 & Packet8 major outage
BREAKING!
A source is telling me that Level 3 Communications and Packet 8 are having a system-wide network outage for the last 30 minutes. Level 3 is a huge provider of VoIP termination and I believe Packet8 uses their network for termination. Other VoIP service providers will also be affected if indeed Level 3 is having an outage. I’m trying to confirm this as I type this.
I’m currently on hold (5min so far) for Packet8’s technical support and sent my contacts at 8×8 an email. I’ll update this post when I find out more.
Update: Just talked with Packet8 technical support and indeed they are experiencing outages. They also confirmed they use Level 3, so it appears Level 3 is the cause. Contacting Level 3 next. Stay tuned!
