RIM Paid $8.3 M for Dash. Proof That Hardware a Risky Business
Research In Motion bought Dash Navigation in May for an undisclosed price, but yesterday an investment adviser did the math and stated on his blog that the BlackBerry maker paid $8.3 million for the navigation company. Davis Freeberg combed through Research In Motion’s SEC filings and its first-quarter fiscal 2010 conference call in June, and […]

AT&T Thinks Prepaid Data Plans Could Drive 3G Everywhere
This morning I chatted with Glenn Lurie, president of national distribution at AT&T, about the carrier’s strategy to embed wireless access into anything that isn’t a smartphone, netbook or PC. He said AT&T is working to find pricing models that may include prepaid data plans (we think that’s a good idea) to make 3G access […]
E-Books Are Hot, So Why Did E-Ink Sell for So Little?
The Kindle DX uses E-Ink technology
Prime View International, a Taiwanese company that makes an e-readers display part, said today it would purchase E-Ink, a company that provides the digital ink technology in the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, for $215 million. The two companies have been partners in developing the Sony and Amazon e-reader products, […]
Amazon Kindles Good For Telcos, Bad for ARPU
Devices like Amazon’s Kindle e-reader are pioneering a business model that will help carriers grow their subscriptions at the expense of annual revenue per user, according to a report out today from Nielsen. The audience tracking company also follows wireless subscriptions and, in its analysis of first-quarter data, noted that alternative sources of revenue […]
Why Jeff Bezos Is Obsessed With Waste
In a footnote to Amazon’s 2008 letter to shareholders, Jeff Bezos related this moment of Zen:
At a fulfillment center recently, one of our Kaizen experts asked me, “I’m in favor of a clean fulfillment center, but why are you cleaning? Why don’t you eliminate the source of dirt?” I felt like the Karate Kid.
It may […]
Surprise! Amazon Launches Large-Screen Kindle
Amazon today unveiled a large-screen version of its Kindle e-reader, fulfilling the predictions of hundreds of tech bloggers. The Kindle DX has a 9.7-inch electronic paper display, a built-in PDF reader, an auto-rotate capability like that of the iPhone, the same 3G wireless technology as the old Kindle, and storage for up to 3,500 books. […]
Jeff Bezos on The State of Kindle
For someone who likes books, especially the old fashioned kind (you know, the ones printed on paper), I was predisposed to disliking (and dismissing) Kindle, the e-reader developed by Amazon. So when Amazon sent me a review unit of the new Kindle 2.0, they were taking a big risk, since I have been vocal about […]
The Standalone Kindle Won’t Stand Alone for Long
Amazon unleashed its second-generation Kindle device as expected today, and it doesn’t fail to please in the looks and specs department. There’s seven times more memory, advanced eInk capabilities for 16-color grayscale and faster page refreshing, plus an updated design that addresses some of the original Kindle’s shortcomings. The device even reads text aloud. You […]
Sony Reader PRS-700 — Great, But for One Thing …
Yes, there was a commuter this morning waiting for the 7:17 reading his Kindle.
And that’s all I needed to start thinking about ebooks and ebook readers and how maybe someday all printed material will be digital and there will be no more newspapers or magazines.
Wait! I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.
Do find the whole thing pretty cool so was intrigued by this piece of writing today.
So all you ever wanted to know about the Sony Reader PRS-700 is here at Mobile Tech Review. A very positive review, but there is something amiss …
What’s the catch? The touch screen layer reduces contrast. Yikes!!!
Digital readers like the Reader and Amazon’s Kindle use e-ink technology, a very low power, paper-like display that’s non-glare and high contrast (much like a book’s pages).
Touch isn’t part of the e-ink technology, nor is backlighting, so we rarely see a reader offering these. Sony, cutting-edge company that they are, found a way to add these two desirable features.
Sony added a touch layer on top of the e-ink display and embedded LED side-lights into the frame that surrounds the display. Clever.
That’s the good, and like I said, check out the whole story at Mobile Tech Review.

New e-Newspaper Reader Heats Up e-Reader Market
The electronic newspaper, a large portable screen that is constantly updated with the latest news, has been a prop in science fiction for ages. It also figures in the dreams of newspaper publishers struggling with rising production and delivery costs, lower circulation and decreased ad revenue from their paper product.
While the dream device remains on the drawing board, Plastic Logic is introducing its version of an electronic newspaper reader — a lightweight plastic screen that mimics the look, but not the feel, of a printed newspaper.
The device, which is unnamed, uses the same technology as the Sony eReader and Amazon’s Kindle (photo above).
Both of those devices are intended primarily as book readers, but Plastic Logic’s device has a screen that is more than twice as large. The size of a piece of copier paper, it can be continually updated via a wireless link and can store and display hundreds of pages of newspapers, books and documents.
The reader will go on sale in the first half of next year. Plastic Logic will not announce which news organization will display its articles on it until the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, when it will also reveal the price.
Read more about it at the New York Times.

Amazon To Re-Kindle Its Popular eBook Reader
Amazon will reportedly ship new versions of its Kindle e-book reader before year’s end. The original reader launched last November sold out in its first week and had Amazon scrambling to fill holiday orders. While sales have been brisk, estimates vary.
A Seattle newspaper confirmed late last week that Amazon.com is in the late stages of rolling out two new versions of Kindle. Reports unconfirmed by Amazon indicate there will be at least two new devices — one with a new user interface, but the same dimensions of the original paperback-sized reader, and another the size of an 8-by-11-inch sheet of paper. Other tantalizing details are that the new readers may sport color choices.
The original Kindle has been criticized for its bland appearance and somewhat clunky controls, so color and a new interface could help sales. Not that Amazon seems to be complaining.
Low estimates of current Kindle sales are pegged at around 230,000 units shipped in nine months, while others speculate that more than 380,00 have been sold.

Kindle Moving & Grooving
Ever since Amazon launched the Kindle last November, TechCrunch has been wondering about just how successful it’s been. (Me, too!)
The electronic book initially sold out and supplies have been tight. The Kindle is such a small part of Amazon’s overall business that the company does not break out how many it’s sold. But we found out anyway: 240,000 Kindles have been shipped since November, according to a source close to Amazon with direct knowledge of the numbers.
Not bad, but could we make the price even more attractive to really rocket sales.
Here’s how the numbers look.

More Radios, Fewer Chips: Why Wireless Integration is Hot
Without a radio, your cell phone is a small computer that can’t show web pages, check email or even make phone calls. In a sense it’s BrickBreaker playing brick. While it may come as a surprise to learn that it’s radios that do the heavy lifting to keep us connected to GPS satellites, cellular networks, […]
