What Can Skype Do For Graduate Students? on the The Graduate Student Survival Blog. Save money is the first concern. I chipped in ten more things grad students can do with Skype: #10: Robots. The Skype survival guide by David Tang of VoSKY Technologies makes the case for Skype trunking, adding Skype gateways to PBXs. 987 Hotels (Prague, Barcelona) uses VoSKY’s 9040 Exchange gateway. Is Our Internet Future in Danger? InfoWorld’s Gruman and Kaneshige say it is, that demand ...
Stupid Shirt Tricks
A few years ago, Stowe Boyd gained some notoriety - and enough money to buy a 30″ Apple monitor - by wearing a logo-ed T-shirt for $15/day. It was a unique gimmick. That said, two new entries in the pay-me-to-wear-your-corporate-tshirt - iwearyourshirt and Girl in Your Shirt - are just dumb and unoriginal. There, I said it, and feel much better. DISQUS for discussions
Lately the comments and replies on Fractals of Change have gotten a lot more intense and interesting, maybe because these are interesting times. Typepad comment handling is pretty primitive so I’ve switched to DISQUS starting with this post. DISQUS supports threaded comments, has a more powerful profile system for commenters across blogs which use DISQUS, lets you (and me) get email notification of replies to comments and even lets us reply to comments with comments by reply email. Should ...
7 Ways to Talk Your Way To the Top in a Down Market
Abigail Johnson Over the last few weeks, we have all heard admonitions to startups (and all companies) to tighten their belts, be realistic about their businesses and hunker down for the long term. This is certainly good advice (in this market, and probably most of the time). But a few other things should also be stressed: He who wins in a down market wins. Some people will cede ground. Be prepared, tactically and strategically, to grab it. Because major changes are happening in the market ...

GMail Voice and Video Chat: Threading Voice and Video Into Email Dialogues
Earlier this week the GMail weblog announced GMail voice and video chat; basically they are designed to add voice and video modes to an email thread; from the GMail blog post: … today we’re launching voice and video chat — right inside Gmail. We’ve tried to make this an easy-to-use, seamless experience, with high-quality audio and video — all for free. All you have to do is download and install the voice and video plugin and we take care of the rest. And in the spi...
How Old Is Your Computer?
It used to be that every three years, workers would get brand new computers from their businesses’ tech departments. But for many those days are over. Many workers haven’t been issued a new computer in years. The reason: Delaying computer upgrades is one of the easiest ways for a tech department to cut its budget. How about you working with a four-year-old ThinkPad with its maddeningly slow response times and out-of-date software … Now that the economy has taken a pronoun...
One Laptop Per European Plan?
Europeans will soon be able to buy their own XO laptop. The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization is planning to sell the devices via online store Amazon’s European outlets starting this coming Monday. The machines will be sold under the Give One, Get One plan that the OLPC organization has already run in the U.S. Under that plan, buyers get one machine for themselves and the other is donated to a school child in a developing nation. Deloitte Fast 500 Results Posted
It’s late, but I wanted to get this post done before the week is out. With so much bad news out there, it’s important to take notice of the good things, and I’ve got one here. Deloitte compiles its annual Technology Fast 500 of high growth North American companies, and the 2008 list was just announced this week. I haven’t posted about this listing recently, but did post about their companion ranking - the Canadian Fast 50 - last year. I missed the Fast 50 this time aroun...
