Maybe We Don’t Need So Much Credit
A friend of ours has started a “new economy” business; she makes delicious Vermont brownies and sells them online at vermontbrowniecompany.com. Lots of brownies made with good Vermont ingredients are rolling out of South Hero to the brownie-starved world. The bad economy doesn’t seem to have hurt demand. Equally important, the poor credit environment isn’t likely to stifle Vermont Brownie Company’s growth. There’s an important lesson here for entrepreneurs...
Up close with President-Elect Obama:
Back on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007, Risa and I attended a brunch in New York City that was attended by then Senator Barack Obama and about 40 other people, including friends who were executives in the Media industry. I first shared these photos back on February 4, 2007. This gathering took place prior to his announcement to run for President. During the meeting, President-Elect Obama addressed the questions that were asked of him by the guests and was both open and approachable. As the meetin...
Programming a Parallel Future
Things change fast in computer science, but odds are that they will change especially fast in the next few years. Much of this change centers on the shift toward parallel computing. In the short term, parallelism will take hold in massive datasets and analytics, but longer term, the shift to parallelism will impact all software, because most existing systems are ill-equipped to handle this new reality. Like many changes in computer science, the rapid shift toward parallel computing is a fun...
Help, We’re Being Digitally Bombarded
I love the Web and the fascinating number of useful and useless tools but it can also a huge time-suck and productivity killer. Like many digital animals, the Web constantly seduces you. Just when you’ve got e-mail and IM within your communications arsenal, you’re using Twitter, Facebook and Friendfeed. Then, you’ve got Digg, del.icio.us, GMail, Google Reader, Mixx, et al to track and bookmark it all. At some point, it’s overwhelming. It’s impossible to be everywher...

Closed Captioning for Deaf Comes to Radio
Now hear this! Researchers at Towson University in suburban Baltimore are working on new technology that will allow for closed captioning of radio broadcasts for those with hearing impairments. (Now this is a good idea!) The new system, which could be marketed next year if all goes well, was tested Tuesday night in conjunction with NPR’s coverage of the presidential election. Look for this on your new HD Radio! More at The Sun. Tags: closed captioning, hd radio, npr Related Ent...
Sony Introduces New Format for Audio CDs
Just what the world needs! Sony has launched a new audio CD format dubbed Blu-spec, which apparently allows users to burn discs with the Blu Laser Diode system without losing compatibility with existing CD drives. (Backwards compatibility is always a good idea with any kind of new product!) (BTW, do you think they will try to revive Digital Audio Tape — remember DAT? — anytime soon?) Sony expects to offer about 60 titles by Christmas and holiday season shopping time, but...

MacBook Mini on Its Way?
One of my favorite analysts, Ben Reitzes of Barclays Capital, has raised an interesting point about a pretty obvious gap in the Apple product line-up. Reitzes has asserted that it “makes complete sense” for the company to introduce an ultra-portable device to fill the price gap between the $399 high-end iPod Touch and the $999 MacBook. “This $600 gap needs to be filled and we think it can be with a premium ultra-portable device using multi-touch technology,” he writes....
Amazon Web Services Not Just for Early Adopters
Amazon Web Services’ platform is increasingly gaining popularity beyond Web 2.0 and video companies. Case in point is the Amazon Web Services Start-Up Challenge, whose seven finalists are a diverse group of companies, among them Knewton, which provides live online educational testing prep services; remote health record management software firm MedCommons; Pixily, which digitizes paper documents and stores them for later retrieval; and Zephyr, an enterprise software testing services firm. ...
Mitel’s News - Managing in Tough Times
In a sign of the times, Mitel held an analyst roundup call this afternoon to update us on some important and timely developments. It was organized on short notice - today - and I guess they felt it necessary to get some clarity out there in advance of VoiceCon next week. The call was quite short - about 15 minutes, and I couldn’t make it, but got a debrief right after from Mitel’s Kevin Johnson. I don’t often do newsy items like this, but I think it’s telling about the pr...
Your Future Broadband Will Cost More, for Less
AT&T this week said it would join other broadband providers in trialing tiered broadband services. The trial packages range from the ability to download between 20 and 150 Gigabytes of information and are supposedly an effort to help AT&T manage the growth of traffic on its network. But the move is more likely an attempt to capture some of the value of the content moving through its pipes without getting in trouble with regulators. As broadband matures, carriers aren’t merely upgr...
