Top Three Virtual Worlds for Election Day
Say you’re looking for the perfect place to watch the election results pour in tonight, but your living room seems too lonely, your favorite blog seems too impersonal, and (depending on how the vote goes) your neighborhood bar may break out into a fight. How about a virtual world space, where you can follow and discuss the tally live with avatars from around the globe? Here’s a handy traveler’s guide for doing just that: WeeWorld (free reg. required) For the election, the av...
What Recession? Herman Miller Launches a $1,600 Chair
Herman Miller, the creator of the wildly popular Aeron chair, have built a high-end chair that will make you all the more comfortable as you sit for eight hours staring in disbelief at your plummeting stock portfolio. At $1,600 the Embody chair doesn’t come cheap, but you’ll be shelling out for nostalgia — hearkening back to the boom times of 2007 when stocks were soaring and people spent $5 on a cup of coffee and $60,000 on an all-natural horsehair mattress from Sweden. In fa...
The Rotten Apple in the Channel
In its latest financial filing AT&T claims that they sold 6.9M iPhones and added 1M new cellular customers in the quarter due to the iPhone 3G. (Apple says that 39% of quarterly revenues were due to pushing out 200M iPhones so far.) Here’s the funny part: Agents can’t sell the iPhone. Agents can sell Blackberries and other phones but not the iPhone. Once again AT&T spends money to create a “Solution Provider” Alliance Channel that demonstrates preferences to...
Explaining Voxeo in a 30-second video…
While out at ITEXPO in Los Angeles last month, I had a chance to meet up with Jeb Brilliant (yes, that’s his real name), someone who I had come to know through all the various Squawk Box conference calls/podcasts that I had participated in. He joined me as I was walking the show floor and then back at the Voxeo booth he asked if he could record a very brief 30-second video interview with me talking about what Voxeo does. He has now posted that video and you’re welcome to check it o...
Some interesting TMCnet videos on 4G, wireless, and more
Greg Galitzine has an interesting interview with Carl Ford (formerly with VON) about the future of wireless, including 4G and the pending 4GWE (4G Wireless Evolution) event co-located with ITEXPO. Carl discusses gadgets, smart phones, the Amazon Kindle, and more as the future growth factors in an saturated wireless phone market. He also discusses the challenges of 3G, femtocells, and more.Go check it out:http://www.tmcnet.com/tmc/videos/default.aspx?vid=657 Another interesting video is Carl Ford...

Flickr Without Yahoo?
There was some major news from Flickr today on the inclusion of its three billionth photograph. That’s incredibly impressive but it got me thinking about how Flickr might have been different if Yahoo hadn’t snapped up the company for a reported $40-million in 2005. Would Flickr be any different than it is today? It’s obviously impossible to determine either way but I think Flickr would have been a much more interesting, innovative and progressive company. For one, I think Flick...
Salesforce.com’s Clouded Dreams
Maybe Larry Ellison was right — maybe cloud computing has been so overhyped that the term now applies to pretty much anything. A perfect example: Salesforce.com’s Dreamforce event. After riding the SasS wave to a market capitalization of $3.7 billion, it seems co-founder and CEO Marc Benioff and his minions have jumped on the cloud computing bandwagon. Salesforce.com is now calling itself a cloud computing company. And you shouldn’t expect any less from Benioff, the master marketer. ...
Skype group in LinkedIn…
I’ve been a LinkedIn user for years but only recently started paying attention to the “Groups” feature… and noticed a group related to Skype that does include people associated with Skype, such as Peter Parkes. It’s not clear to me yet how much discussion will occur within the group, but if you are a LinkedIn user also interested in Skype, you may want to check it out. Free the Airwaves: All of Them
Today the Federal Communication Commission will vote on two large wireless mergers and issue rules regarding a proposal to create an alternative wireless broadband network in the unused spectrum between digital television stations. Between the white spaces issue championed by Google and other tech titans, approving the Sprint-Clearwire joint venture to create a nationwide WiMAX network and approving the Verizon-Alltel merger, there will be a lot of winners and losers. So it’s a big day at...
FCC puts off rural funding and freemium decision
The Federal Communication Commission scheduled it for election day, but they will not vote to reform intercarrier compensation and rural telephone subsidies as part of the Universal Service Fund (USF). While it may be brought up again, it probably won’t be until the new presidential administration appoints new commissioners. Supporters had hoped for a delay to hold hearings in December. Some services, such as free conference calling, use loopholes in intercarrier tariffs to pay the ...
Fab Four Heading to Rock Band; Can iTunes Be Far Behind?
In an auspicious time for the music business, we may have the first big hint that the Beatles may finally be on the way to Apple’s iTunes. That’s a big leap of faith but hear me out: The Beatles’ label Apple Corps will join MTV to unveil plans to bring the Beatles’ catalog to the wildly popular Rock Band video game. These two groups have been trying to hammer out details for months, and it appears they’ve finally come together (yes, pun intended.) The reason this is...
Next Stop - Dallas and the Korean Tech Showcase
Got a short trip coming up tomorrow - am flying to Dallas - a place I’ve only been to once before. I’ve been invited by KOTRA - the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency - to attend a showcase of Korean companies looking for partnerships, advice, investment, etc. to help them become established in North America. This should be a really interesting event, and a great opportunity to learn about some cool, up and coming companies. There will be over 50 companies to meet, and they cove...

The investors in round include Foundry Group, First Round Capital and SoftTech VC, all previous investors in the company. Marcoullier previously started MyBlogLog and subsequently sold it to Yahoo. Gnip makes it easy for companies such as Twitter that put out large amount of real time data and distribute it to multiple sources without overwhelming their resources. I video intervie...

A Grocery Store Luddite
At the grocery store near my house, they installed some fancy-dancy automated check-out machines a few months ago. The concept, in theory, is that technology is an advance because it gets people through the check-out process without having to deal with check-out people - you know, the kind that costs you money, demand raises, treat customers with indifference on occasion, and call in sick. Given grocery stores operate on razor-thin margins, the machines are seen as an godsend. The problem is the...

Watching TV & Surfing Internet Go Hand in Hand
Nielsen’s new TV/Internet Convergence Panel, which electronically measures both television and Internet usage in the same homes, has found that television viewing and online video streaming are complementary activities. Gosh! According to the convergence panel, the heaviest users of the Internet are also among the heaviest viewers of television: the top fifth of Internet users spend more than 250 minutes per day watching television, compared to 220 minutes of television viewing by peop...
Circuit City Dimming Its Lights
Circuit City will close 155 stores and lay off 7,200 employees, or 17% of its workforce, as it continues to restructure its business. These closings represent more than 20% of U.S. stores and includes the exiting of 12 markets. The store closings will shrink the number of locations the chain operates in the U.S. to 566. The chain also faces credit issues with its vendors. Circuit City said certain vendors have changed payment terms, including demanding cash for inventory befo...
AT&T Trials Tiered Broadband in Nevada
What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas …? Is that the same for Reno? Following in the footsteps of Time Warner Cable, Frontier Communications and several UK Internet service providers, AT&T has unveiled a tiered broadband service in Nevada. According to a Friday filing with the Federal Communication Commission, AT&T executives met with the legal adviser to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to discuss “usage-based pricing” as a form of network management. AT&T ha...
AT&T Trials Tiered Broadband in Nevada
Following in the footsteps of Time Warner Cable, Frontier Communications and several U.K internet service providers, AT&T unveiled a tiered broadband service in Reno, Nev., on Nov. 1. According to a Friday filing with the Federal Communication Commission, AT&T executives met with the legal adviser to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to discuss “usage based pricing” as a form of network management. AT&T has hinted that this was coming for the last few months. From the filing: In...
