Cool Open Source Telephony Technology at Web 2.0 Expo
Serdar Yegulalp at InformationWeek recently wrote, …the award for Single Coolest Thing Done With Open Source at the Web 2.0 show has to go to Ifbyphone. What is the “Coolest Thing” they are referring to? Well, as the article puts it: Enter Ifbyphone, a “cloud telephone app platform.” Anyone who can build a forms-based Web app can now also build a telephony app. The whole system has been constructed along the lines of existing Web services, so it’s all a bunc...
iPhone Defections Good for AT&T, Better for Wireless Broadband
Of those people that purchased the new Apple 3G iPhone this summer, some 30 percent of them defected to AT&T from other networks, according to a report out today from analysis firm The NPD Group. With about 23 percent of people switching carriers between June and August, that’s a lot of churn, but since two-thirds of the AT&T iPhone newcomers came from Verizon (47 percent) or Sprint (19 percent), both of whom have good 3G networks, my guess is defectors were seduced by getting co...
Join the disruption - speak at eComm 2009!
If you read this blog, the Voxeo blogs or follow my Twitter stream, you know that I very frequently travel and speak at conferences related to VoIP, telecommunications, etc. Often to the tune of 1-2 weeks per month. I enjoy the presenting immensely in that I get to teach people and tell the story about the disruption going on within telephony and communications in general… and also get to learn from some of the amazing people out there about what they see happening all around us. Yet while...
Melodis Raises $7M for Midomi iPhone App
In the same way that mobile access to Wikipedia has transformed stupid arguments, mobile song recognition apps are truly neat when you need to name that tune. While they’ve been around for a while (though they didn’t always work so well and sometimes they cost money), the interface of the iPhone and the prominence of Apple’s App Store has given them a big boost. Today, Shazam (where you can hold your phone up to a speaker to analyze what song is playing) and Midomi (where you ...

Despite Cool Tech, Samsung Isn’t Going to Pay a Lot for SanDisk
It’s common for companies in the midst of a hostile takeover to claim that their shares are undervalued (see Yahoo-Microsoft). SanDisk, which is being pursued by Samsung for $5.8 billion, is no different, and today its claims were examined in the Wall Street Journal. The paper focused on SanDisk’sX4 memory technology, which is central to the company’s argument that it’s worth more than what Samsung is offering. But cool technology aside, the unforgiving pressures of the ...
TMC & Digium Partner for Digium|Asterisk World at ITEXPO
I’ve had some big news I had to keep under wraps until today. My company, Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) and Digium, the Asterisk Company, today announced that they have partnered to host Digium|Asterisk World™ during INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO East 2009 in Miami, Florida. Having ITEXPO host Digium|Asterisk World is a huge win for TMC and further cements TMC’s ITEXPO as the most preeminent VoIP and IP communications show. In fact, I recently came across this q...

Today, I am thrilled to announce the start of our company’s next phase. We have just raised $4.5 million, led by new investor Alloy Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm with over $1 billion under management. New Article - Social Media in the Enterprise
I’m an occasional contributor to Business Trends Quarterly, and recently wrote an article for them on the impact social media is having in the enterprise. It’s a sprawling topic, with no easy answers, and hopefully you’ll find my article a good starting point for futher exploration. I’m hoping to continue this theme with BTQ in upcoming issues. The article has now been posted to their website, and you can read it here. Let me know what you think. Technorati tags: Business...
After Cutting 10% of Its Workforce eBay Goes Shopping
I am pretty sure at some point we have all done this - gone on a shopping spree to mask the feelings that come after a cataclysmic event. It doesn’t make our problems go away but somehow it helps us feel better for a few hours. It is good to see that large, lumbering tech giants have a similar approach to business life. eBay, a San Jose, Calif,-based company today announced that it was cutting 10% of its workforce, about 1,000 jobs in addition to getting rid of several hundred temps. T...
Internet connectivity: not optional
Tim Horan, of Oppenheimer Equity Research, in his “Daily Data Times” investment newsletter, writes: Study Finds Internet Access Considered Non Discretionary in Weakening Economy According to a study by Jupiter Research, conducted to see how a deteriorating economy would impact entertainment spending, ~33% of respondents would cut down on trips to the movies, 12% would cancel subscriptions to premium network programming (i.e. HBO, Showtime, etc.), but only 2% would cancel their Intern...
Matt Mullenweg: Wordpress Evangelist/Rock Star
Aside from the sizzle within the next Wordpress upgrade (aka 2.7), one of the most interesting parts of WordCamp Toronto was experienced the community’s adulation for Matt Mullenweg. It’s pretty amazing to see how Mullenweg, who still all of 24-years-old, handles himself as Wordpress’ chief evangelist with such ease and charm. Despite Wordpress’ rise as the blogging platform and Automattic’s emergence as a venture-back entity ($29.5-million in the last round from i...
Enomaly: An Open Source Cloud For the Enterprise
Enomaly is trying to sell big business on its open-source cloud management and provisioning software by renaming it and packaging it with enterprise-level support, a model popularized by Red Hat. The software, formerly known as Enomalism, will now use the Enomaly Elastic Computing Platform as its new moniker. The software sits between the servers and applications, allocating virtual resources to programs when they need them. Others offering similar management software include RightScale, Elastr...
Where’s the Money in Online Video?
The sharp growth in online video viewing, increasing availability of TV online, and proliferation of high-quality, web-originated content has made it easy to point the arrow for online video advertising up and to the right. But while video will probably continue to be a bright spot of growth in a dull economy, that’s mostly because it’s just getting started. The reality is revenues will be close to nothing for a long time, and the growing number of tech entrepreneurs and creative ty...

Deflation Primer
Deflation is the debtor’s worst enemy just as inflation is the debtor’s best friend. In inflationary times the value of the asset you borrowed money to buy goes up so quickly that you can always sell and come out ahead despite the interest you paid in the meantime. In deflationary time, the outstanding amount of the loan can easily become greater than the current value of the asset. Now you’re underwater and can’t sell without putting money in. If you’re having tro...
