How to Build a Financial Crisis-Proof Business
We’ve written recently about how bootstrapping founders can help themselves navigate a very tight credit market. Now, the implosion of the investment banking industry promises to level what was left of the landscape for both IPO and M&A exits. Startup founders would be wise to reassess their strategic priorities. With fewer opportunities to cash out of their current and future portfolio companies, the agendas of angels and VCs will also shift. Founders who are raising funds will certainly...

So, What’s In it For Me?
The Web 2.0 landscape is like going to a wonderful all-you-can-eat buffet where the menu is never-ending and there’s no worry the kitchen is going to run out of food. With new services easy to create, launch and distribute, the Web 2.0 pipeline is gushing with new entries - some of them innovative, some of them useful/valuable and, sadly, many of them vanity projects that serve a niche so small that you wonder why they were created in the first place. With so much choice and competition, t...
Dan York Clarifies Skype’s Role within Asterisk
Following up on Thursday’s announcement of Skype for Asterisk for which details were posted on Skype Journal late Thursday, Dan York has published a more technical post, “Clarifying how Asterisk could possibly be used as a Skype-to-SIP gateway“, discussing how the Asterisk PBX treats incoming and outgoing calls, effectively independently of how the Asterisk PBX is accessed either internally or externally or is directed to make outbound calls. However, the point I was making in ...
Counterpoint: It’s Time for Venture Capital – Now More Than Ever
Recently two separate posts ran here that argued in favor of technology entrepreneurs who need early-stage money taking it from angels. I, however, believe they should seriously consider taking it from people in my profession: venture capitalists. The current economic meltdown and its effects, which are expected to be felt for at least the next year, require investors with deep pockets and a long-term investment horizon starting from a company’s earliest days. Entrepreneurs seeking fundin...
Exclusive: First Look Inside the HP POD Data Centers
I traveled down to Houston today to check out a data center geek’s version of paradise — the inside of the factory where HP builds their rack-mounted servers and high-value blade systems. I shot plenty of photos that show how a bunch of chips and boards gets assembled into a blade that I will put in a later post, but I also got to take a tour of the inside of HP’s containerized data center, known as a POD. “Tour” isn’t really the right word, since it’s ...

How about a 9-Megapixel Camera Phone?
German-based Digital Imaging Systems (DIS) has introduced a camera module for cell phones that for the first time includes 9-megapixel technology. (Remember when 1 MP was a lot?) The module delivers image data with a max resolution of 3488 x 2616 pixels through either a parallel interface or optional MIPI interface. Full production is scheduled to begin later in the year. The unit also contains an array of advanced photographic features, according to the DIS. These include auto-...
