5 Startups Putting Wireless To Work for Energy
GigaOM readers are well-versed in both the wireless broadband networks that carriers are building and the Wi-Fi gear that we use in our homes, but what about the wireless technology that is starting to manage energy for the power grid as well as energy use within our homes? Sensor technology and wireless networks can provide disruptive innovations and increased transparency for the energy industry, enabling utilities to make the grid smarter and help consumers slash energy use. Here’s our...
Invitations Noise
I don’t know how many of you are on LinkedIn or Facebook but it has been a strange couple of weeks. Before I left for IT Expo West, I was getting duplicate invites from several people that I did not know. The unusual part was the duplicates. So I replied to each invite asking for information about what list my email address was on. No reply from the 7 or so folks. Flying back from LA, it’s a week later, still no reply. Why invite me to your network, if you don’t use it or check...
Netbooks Yes or Netbooks No?
A new report predicts that ultramobile devices will reach 200 million in unit sales by 2013 and will match the market for notebook PCs. ABI Research said products such as netbooks and mobile Internet devices, or MIDs, will gross $27 billion by then, with MID units growing in popularity to surpass its rival. All this from ZDNet. On the other hand, in a wide-ranging interview, Dell CEO Michael Dell (in photo) voiced suspicion that small-screened netbooks will shake up the computer in...
In U.S., MySpace Still Massive, Facebook Just Faster
Hitwise has released some interesting stats from August: Of the 56 leading social networking web sites, MySpace.com received 67.54 percent of U.S. visits. Facebook, by comparison, got a mere 20.56 percent of total visits. Hitwise says that the market shares of U.S. visits to the social networking category overall decreased 2 percent in August from July to account for 6.4 percent of all U.S. visits. Year-over-year, visits to the category decreased 17 percent. The decline would make you believe...
MySpace Music Not an iTunes Rival: MySpace CEO
Chris DeWolfe, CEO of MySpace, who has been on a whirlwind tour promoting MySpace Music, his new joint venture with record labels, says that the new service isn’t competitive with Apple and iTunes. “I think it is a complimentary product to what Apple provides,” DeWolfe said in a phone call earlier today. “It will create more demand for iPod.” He insisted that they didn’t “create this venture as a competitor to Apple.” I am pretty sure Chris’...
More on how “Skype For Asterisk” actually works…
As per usual, Tom Keating gets us more details on the “Skype For Asterisk” beta program I just wrote about… in his update post, Tom explains how it will work: Well, on an inbound call to your Skype username, both your Skype desktop client rings (if running) and your Asterisk IP phone rings. You can take the call using either your PC’s Skype software or your IP phone. Similarly, if someone calls your SkypeIn number, both will ring. Further, if someone dials your corporate ...
More on Skype for Asterisk
Continuing the coverage of the big Skype for Asterisk news I covered earlier today… In a nutshell, the Asterisk server acts as a Skype-to-SIP gateway, a very popular requested feature, mapping Asterisk SIP-based phones onto the Skype network via the Asterisk Skype channel driver. Technically, you could call Asterisk a Skype-to-IAX gateway as well. So how does it work? Well, on an inbound call to your Skype username, both your Skype desktop client rings (if running) and yo...
Skype for Asterisk gateway software announced
Tom Keating reports from Astricon on Stefan Öberg’s announcement of Skype For Asterisk, a channel driver that connects the Asterisk call manager software to the Skype cloud. Register for the driver through a Skype for Asterisk beta program form. Dan York explains the new value add is "two-way connectivity in and out of the Skype cloud." Skype is positioning s4a for business, Asterisk VARs as resellers. This is less about a licensing revenue stream than opening Skype ...
Does “Skype for Asterisk” tear down some of Skype’s walls? (and allow SIP-to-Skype?)
Does today’s announcement of a beta version of “Skype for Asterisk” signal a way to tear down some of Skype’s walls? And does this move Skype along toward better SIP interoperability? The announcement happened out at Astricon today and TMC’s Tom Keating had one of the first posts about it - updated with info from TMC reporters who are at Astricon. Both the Digium news release and the Skype blog post highlight these four points that Asterisk users will be able to do...

Bell’s Brilliant Strategy: Charge for GPS!
Armed with a gazillion dollars in debt (Actually, $30-billion give or take a few dollars) if a private equity buy-out is consummated, Bell Canada’s new corporate mantra is: more cash flow, more cash flow. In practical terms, what it means is Bell needs to squeeze as many dollars as it possibly can from consumers without squeezing too hard that they flee to their local cablecos (e.g. Rogers, Videotron, Cogeco). So far, the Mo’ Cash Flo’ (MCF) strategy has seen Bell start to cha...

The AEX410 offers analog (FXS) stations and analog trunk (FXO) modules for connecting to the PSTN or analog devices. Digium Major Announcement - what can it be?
Today, Digium, creator and primary developer of Asterisk, the leading open source telephony platform will be making a major announcement at Astricon later today. Digium hinted to me that a major announcement would be made at Astricon when I visited their Huntsville, Alabama headquarters in August. I tried to find out what the news will be, but alas Digium couldn’t tell me. So I thought it would be fun to prognosticate what this deal could be. 1) Digium’s Switchvox will be distri...
Q2 2008 VoIP Numbers
Some interesting 2Q08 VoIP numbers to share put out by iLocus. VoIP shows some slowing in some sectors, but growth in others. Considering the unstable U.S. economy, these numbers are still very impressive. 7.7 million VoIP access lines shipped during the quarter, down from 7.9 million lines in 1Q08. This represents second sequentially quarterly decline from 4Q07. Of the 7.7 million lines shipped during the quarter, estimated 6.8 million went towards residential VoBB. The remaining were deployed...

Announcing the Social Media Face to face with Jeff Pulver Seminar Series
On October 28, 2008 I will be hosting the first of a series of seminars where I will be sharing my perspective on the state of Social Media and its impact on the future of Business Communication. Back in 1995 I was one of the first people who as a hobbyist and a user of Internet Telephony saw the future impact of the technology on the future of communications. For me it was the thought of telephony as a software rather than a service that caught my attention. Thirteen years later as a pers...

Cisco buys Jabber – The future of XMPP looks bright….
Last week Cisco bought Jabber, the maker of Instant Messaging products and the company behind the XMPP standard for Instant Messaging. The XMPP standard has already gained a lot of traction – it’s the technology behind Google talk and many chat servers including Openfire, ejabberd and more. Cisco will be integrating Jabber technology into all its unified communications products and making XMPP ...
The Fact & Fiction of MySpace Music
MySpace Music is launching today and will be accessible only to the US-based music fans. Some may call it a competitor to Apple’s music store, but it wouldn’t be entirely true for Apple’s strength is downloads, while MySpace has made a name by allowing streaming of tunes in the past. There are other differences and even more challenges for this new audacious venture. Just to jog your memory, MySpace Music is a joint venture between MySpace, four major record labels (anti-trust...
Is T-Mobile Spinning on Google Phone Bandwidth Caps?
There are many problems with T-Mobile USA’s 3G plans as we outlined yesterday. None compares to the seemingly foolish 1 GB bandwidth cap on “unlimited” data plans they are hawking along with the Google Phone. Today, in response to a New York Times query, they seemed to have backed away from the cap. We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident that T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific ...

Cisco Goes Big on Collaboration
Yesterday, I attended an advance briefing at Cisco Canada’s offices about their news today announcing their collaboration portfolio. I was one of four analysts/media people getting the full presentation yesterday - delivered, of course, via Telepresence by Laurent Philonenko in San Francisco. It’s always fun to do things this way, and it sure is easy to get spoiled with TP. The rest of the world sure doesn’t live this way, but that’s another topic. The press embargo ended...
Landlines Going the Way of the Buggy Whip …
According to a report released last week by Nielsen, nearly one in five American households will not have a home phone line by the end of the year. To many, I have a feeling that this is a surprising finding, but it shouldn’t be. Landline home telephones are quickly becoming an unnecessary expense. What can one do on a landline phone that they can’t do with their cell phone? It’s a little bit like that essential tool of the horse-drawn carriage age — the buggy whip. It...
Skype refuses British order for emergency dialing
Skype refuses to comply with 999 ruling. Andrea-Marie Vassou quotes a Skype spokesperson: "At this time, Skype is not complying with Ofcom’s ruling, as we believe that it is not applicable to our software offering and in fact potentially harmful to public safety.” I don’t know enough about UK law to comment on whether the General Conditions of Entitlement for VoIP applies to Skype. Potential harm is straightforward, though. The issue is data quality and authority. Landl...
Netflix, Hulu CEOs to Keynote at NewTeeVee Live 2008
With Mobilize 08 a fading speck in the rearview mirror, we are all gearing up for the second edition of NewTeeVee Live, our conference around online video that will be held on Nov. 13th in San Francisco. Our event last year sold out, so we decided to have an encore. By bringing the same editorial focus to which NewTeeVee readers are accustomed — along with appearances from online video’s biggest names — we hope that the 2008 edition will be even more informative and fun.
