Android: The Good and Bad with G1
- The G1, the first Android-powered headset, could be transformed in ways that maker HTC and carrier T-Mobile can’t imagine. Google’s Android is open to developers, who could write apps to unlock T-Mobile’s G1, tether it as a modem or other things, an analyst said. Google is calling the announcement of the T-Mobile G1 an important milestone in the young history of Android. The first Android-powered handset to come to market is made by HTC with a touchscreen and a slide...
The Devil is in the Details in White Space Debate
The Wireless Innovation Alliance today is making another charge in the war between those trying to keep the unused spectrum between digital television channels clear, and those trying to use that spectrum for wireless broadband. Those so-called white spaces are the last chance for wireless broadband competition in the eyes of the Alliance and the only buffer between interference and your television channels according to the National Association of Broadcasters. Purveyors and users of wireless m...

Did Kevin Rose Take Some of Digg’s New Cash
Digg has raised $28.7 Million in Series C round funding. The company made the announcement earlier this morning. Highland Capital Partners is leading the current round of financing. As part of the funding, Richard de Silva, a partner at Highland Capital Partners is joining the Digg’s Board of Directors. The company will use the funds to expand internationally and will also be moving into newer offices. In addition, the company will be using the funds to hire more people as part of its expansi...
200M Ultramobile Devices in 5 Years? Really?
Asus Eee PC ABI Research put out a report this morning saying by 2013 there will be 200 million ultramobile devices, an emerging class of gadgets that includes netbooks, ultramobile PCs and mobile Internet devices. The report says today there are about 10 million such devices, about 90 percent of which are netbooks. But to say that in five years the tiny web-enabled PCs will reach the same size as today’s worldwide laptop market seems like wishful thinking for the chipmakers hoping to g...

Do the IM protocol wars even matter? Adium and the continued *client* unification of IM…
Do you care any more about zillion different IM services? Do you care about the IM protocol wars that have plagued the usage of IM for the last years? Odds are that if you are an IM user like me, you probably don’t. Why not? Simple… we’ve unified the IM services on the client side and basically stopped caring about the various services and protocols. I was reminded of this fact this morning when I received a message saying that an update was available for Adium on my Mac that...
Common Craft Tackles Search
I’m a big fan of the Common Craft videos, which explain technology in plain English that anyone can understand - even my mother (aka The Luddite). The latest offering looking at doing effective Web searches. You have to love how it uses “mullet” as an example. Technorati Tags: search engines, common craft ...
Verizon allows month-to-month contracts… and the connection of any CDMA device
Given my ongoing interest in potentially using Verizon for a wireless data provider, it was interesting to see Verizon’s announcement that they will now allow ‘month-to-month’ contracts. I called the media contact on the news release and verified that this does also apply to wireless data plans, which is my personal interest. I can’t seem to find that information yet on the Verizon Wireless web site, but perhaps these plans have not yet made their way to Keene, NH. Now, ...
Two Ways to Get Comcast to Increase the Data Cap
A quick chat yesterday with Charlie Douglas, a spokesman for Comcast, elicited some heartening information about the ISP’s stated 250GB-per-month cap on bandwidth. Om’s not a huge fan of caps because he believes they stifle innovation in the long run, but Douglas says that the cap isn’t set in stone. Right now it’s set at about hundred times more than the average Comcast user’s monthly data consumption. Douglas said it’s safe to say that as average consumptio...
Just Say No
I’ve been wrong to advocate hedging the bailout bill with conditions; we should just say “NO”. We can take a fraction of the $700 billion dollars we save and use it for specific anti-recession measures. Let’s start rebuilding our power grid; fix some bridges; maybe even help some homeowners with their mortgages where warranted. But no bailout for Wall Street; none. If we say “yes” to the bailout bill, the Dow will go up. Great time to sell your stocks becaus...
Smart Work, Cities, Planet
Somebody should write a book about Cisco’s pioneering corporate culture — of all the Cisco employees I know, not a one of them goes to the office M-F, 9-5. More likely, they live hundreds of miles away on their ranch, or near their aging parents, or in some dream location of their choosing. They “come to work,” via the Internet and telephone, or via videoconferencing, a technology that Cisco has done so well it deserves to be called telepresence. Employee visits to the mo...
Deerfield.com’s Visnetic MailFlow integrates with 3CX Phone System
Last week Deerfield.com released a new version of its email management package that allows integration with 3CX Phone System, making the process of handling both incoming customer calls and email more seamless. For example, agents can launch a call to a customer that sent in an email with a single click. This makes it easier for the agent to call a customer to resolve a problem, which is often ...
How Internet-Enabled Appliances Can Save You Time & Money
The idea of the Internet-enabled home appliance has been around since the heady days of the dotcom boom, when LG introduced its DIOS refrigerator and Sun Microsystem’s Scott McNealy paired a tablet PC with a Whirlpool fridge. But LG’s “market leader,” which sold for $10,000, is no longer being made, while similar products from the likes of Samsung never even saw the light of day. Such devices have yet to become ubiquitous in the home because, well, who really needs the I...
eComm 2009 Site Now Live
Just a quick post to let you know planning for eComm 2009 is well under way. Lots of work to do, and am contributing where I can as part of the Advisory Board. The eComm 2009 website has recently gone live - unofficially - but it’s there for you to check out. It’s very much a work in progress, but you should at least bookmark it now. As the program firms up, we’ll be updating the site, as well as other areas such as the Advisory Board section and the blog. Lee Dryburgh remains...
VoIP, 3G Roaming & G1, aka the Google Phone
So the big day is finally here: Google has released its Android operating system, the latest entrant into the mobile OS wars. The Android-based, HTC-made G1 was launched earlier today at a ceremony in New York, and among the attendees were our intrepid reporters Liz Gannes and Craig Rubens. After getting a first-hand look at the device, they promptly called me and compared it to the iPhone. (Coverage from across the network can be found here.) But from a VoIP, data and broadband perspective, I ...
Jazinga IP-PBX Launches
Today Jazinga, launched it’s IP telephone system solution with a simplified installation and configuration process takes designed to take about 15 minutes to set up. I’ve had a Jazinga unit in TMC Labs for several weeks now, but just haven’t had the chance to hook it up and test it. But is on my to-do list. It’s a pretty inexpensive IP-PBX available directly from Jazinga Inc. and its channel partners for a MSRP of $1,095 USD. In the meantime, thought I’d share the n...
