Personal news - wife is pregnant
Just a break from your daily VoIP and gadgets news fix to announce my wife is pregnant with our second child. And in case you were wondering what our first child looks like, here’s a few photos of our 2.5 year old daughter Megan, who has perhaps the brightest bluest eyes I’ve seen in my life - not that I’m biased or anything… Tags: child, megan keating, pregnant Related Entries Gadgets and Water Don’t mix - Jan 30, 2008 Over protective dog while I̵...

When it comes to social media, everyone talks about being part of the conversation. As a result, there’s a lot of talking happening on blogs, micro-blogs (Twitter, et al) and social networks. One of the challenges is trying to listen to all these conversations. If you’re interested in a particular idea, issue, trend, company or person, how do you effectively tap into the conversation? The good news is over the last little while, new and interesting social media “listeningR...

It’s the Keyboard, Stupid
For all the talk about whether the iPhone is going to hammer the Blackberry, there are plenty of reasons why that won’t happen. Perhaps the biggest - and the most obvious - is the Blackberry has a fully-functional keyboard so you can easily write e-mails, text messages and blog posts. Aside from the Blackberry’s durability and robust e-mail system, the keyboard is arguably the Blackberry’s killer app. Sure, people complain their thumbs are too big for the keys but, all in all,...
Baseball is my Game. The Mets are my Team.
I love baseball. I have for my entire life. While others may sometimes find it boring, I enjoy watching baseball games. I was one of those Strat-o-Matic kids who enjoyed playing baseball as board game many years ago. A baseball geek. And a Mets fan. Baseball is an amazing game. An ever forgiving game. If the team you are a fan of is having a bad night, there is almost always a tomorrow. So as long as your team can get over the crushing defeat the night before, there is a chance that today your ...

Following close on the heels of our content distribution partnerships with BusinessWeek.com and CNNMoney, I am delighted to announce that the content from our network is going to be featured on the New York Times’s web site as part of their technology channel. The Times today announced partnerships with several independent bloggers. Andy Plesser has an in-depth report on his blog, along with a video interview with Vindu Goel, deputy technology editor at the Times. Goel also writes about ...

One is for ’Software Development Engineer in Test - MBD - RTC’ and the other for ‘Lead Software Develpment Engineer in Test - Office Communications Server’. iPass Stats Show Paid Data Use is Slowing
While devices such as the iPhone and the new Android phone from T-Mobile, the G-1, make it even easier to access data from the cellular networks or a Wi-Fi hot spot, the growth in wireless broadband access slowed in the first half of the year. According to data released by iPass, growth rates in the first six months of 2008, while still on the rise, were far less impressive when contrasted with the sharp uptick in Wi-Fi usage in the U.S. and Europe in the second half of 2007 over the second hal...
Best Kept Sprint Secret
Here’s something to do: surf over to Sprint.com and try to find any wireline services. After 5 minutes of searching Business Services, navigation takes you to Nextel.com for Sprint’s MPLS offering. On that page, you can find info about MPLS, VPN, IP Convergence, and Internet Access. Yesterday, Sprint gave a presentation to re-affirm to agents that Sprint was still in the wireline game. Of course, Sprint still has a robust backbone, it is what the cellular network runs on. It is also ...
Live from the Google Phone Announcement
Craig and Liz here, reporting live from the T-Mobile/Google launch of the new G1 “Google Phone” running on the new open Android platform. If you’re antsy, here’s Om’s preview post from yesterday: Will the Google Phone Give T-Mobile USA a Boost? And our write-up of Google’s Rich Miner’s keynote at our Mobilize conference last week: Google’s Miner on Mobile: No One Party Will Be In Control. The deets from the press conference below the jump: We̵...
Google’s Android and the future of the (open?) mobile Internet
In just a few minutes, at 10:30am US Eastern time, Google and T-Mobile will be in New York City to announce the launch of the first Android handset. Predictably, the blogosphere is buzzing with posts and articles. I expect, quite honestly, to be a bit underwhelmed by the initial launch… after all, Android is still evolving. We’ll see - the fact that stories are out that Amazon is launching a DRM-free music service along with the Android phone is certainly an interesting dynamic. Tod...
4 Things You Need to Know About T-Mobile 3G
Today is the big announcement in New York by T-Mobile, which will show off its spiffy new G1 phone powered by Google. The G1 is the first smartphone to run the Google Android operating system and is expected to work seamlessly with Google services like Gmail and Google Maps. The G1 will support the relatively new T-Mobile 3G data network, and since not many are familiar with T-Mobile’s 3G, it’s a good time to take a look at four things you should know in order to get the most ou...
M2Z Says it Aced FCC Interference Tests
A venture-backed startup’s attempts to offer free broadband in the AWS-3 spectrum have moved closer today. The company released FCC-observed tests results today that show that devices operating in the band of spectrum eyed by M2Z Networks, which was formed in 2006 to provide an alternative wireless broadband service to most of the country, won’t interfere with devices operating in nearby spectrum bands. M2Z plans to use the AWS-3 band for its wireless broadband network, but spectr...
VoIP Device Maker Ooma Raises Another $16 Million
Ooma, a Palo Alto, Calif,-based company that has created a VoIP phone hardware and services platform has raised another $16 million in third round of funding from it’s existing and new investors. Ooma had previously raised $27 million in two rounds of funding, bringing the total to $43 million. That’s a lot of money especially since the company hasn’t lived up to its initial promise. Ooma, now about four years old had launched last July with much fanfare but lost its was as s...
HUD 3.0 for trixbox CE and any other Asterisk IP-PBX!
I spoke with Kerry Garrison last week at ITEXPO and he gave me a news scoop that Fonality would soon offer the HUD 3.0 Unified Communications client for the open source trixbox CE Asterisk-based platform. trixbox CE is one of the most popular Asterisk distributions. I recently commented in my trixbox Pro review (paid version),”The feature-rich HUD Pro client is certainly a competitive advantage Fonality has over many other Asterisk-based solutions.” As such, offering HUD 3.0 for tri...
Chrome Quickly Loses its Shine
It’s only been a few weeks since Google unleashed Chrome but the buzz seems to have pretty much evaporated. There are probably happy Chrome users but given the excitement about its debut, the Web’s newest browser (the one that was going to reignite the browser wars) appears to have fallen flat. You don’t hear people raving about Chrome or blog extolling its virtues. Is Chrome a dud? Well, you could argue Chrome is under-whelming. Without many bells and whistles, Chrome is lik...

The Rise of the Superphone
John Sangiovanni To describe the segmentation of the mobile phone marketplace, analysts and industry professionals use a common lexicon to group similar devices by their relative features and capabilities. The majority of mobile phones that have graced retail shelves in recent years fall into two distinct categories: featurephones and smartphones. Lately, however, a new category has begun to emerge, that of the superphone. Featurephones are so named, counterintuitively, because at one point ...
Dan York on “Skype and SIP”; Input for Skype’s Platform Ambitions?
Just in case you’ve been on vacation on a remote island not reading Skype Journal the past few days, Phil and Michael Robertson have been having this debate about Skype and interop with SIP-based services (more here and here). It even spread to last Friday’s SquawkBox call. This morning Dan York, who sits on IETF forums on VoIP security, weighed in with his perspective in a post: Skype and SIP Interop - the two sides of the issue raised by Michael Robertson where he lists all the va...
Pirate Bay Imposters Launch Streaming Video Site, Fool Media
A tipster this weekend told us about an upcoming streaming video web site by The Pirate Bay called The Pirate City. The site was apparently launched last week to commemorate the 30th birthday of one of the Pirate Bay’s admins, but was quickly pulled because “something went wrong,” and now features a note promising to return in a few days. A streaming media platform run by the Pirate Bay: That does sound like a good story. Too bad it wasn’t true. Read the whole story at ...
All Teens Play Video Games
A new study says that almost all teens play video games! (Can you believe it?!) More evidence that video games have become the new television for the teen set: A new Pew study reports that 97% of teens 12 to 17 play video games, with half of them having done so the day before they were surveyed. There is a small gender gap: 99% of boys say they play video games compared with “only” 94% of girls. Get more at Variety. Tags: pew, variety, video games Related Ent...
