Radio Radio
Radio beats CD and MP3s when it comes to music listening, according to a recent survey. Nearly two-thirds of Americans said they listen to music nearly every day, according to the report. The radio hasn’t lost its luster with music listening fans despite the popularity of CD and MP3 players and other sources to tune into sound, a recent poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports has found. A plurality of adults (42%) said they still prefer to turn on their radios to listen to music. That beat the...
Microsoft Response Point News
I just met with Microsoft to talk about what’s new in their Response Point IP-PBX. They demo’ed the Aastra AastraLink RP phone system which works with Aastra IP phones with the Response Point “magic” blue button embedded onto the phones. The magic button allows you to use speech-recognition to perform call transfers, directory lookups, and more. I met with Richard Sprague, Senior Director, Microsoft Response Point and Xuedong Huang, General Manager, Microsoft Response Poi...
Cisco Virtualizes The Network, The Data Center
At the VMWorld Show, Cisco took the first concrete steps to establishing a monopoly in the enterprise data centers with the announcement of a new software switch (Nexus 1000) that would allow networking of individual virtual machines (along with their security and management.) The explosion of virtual machines inside the enterprise has forced everyone to deal with virtual machine sprawl. Networking is feeling the same impact of VM sprawl as well, and Cisco wants to jump ahead and become a major...
Nvidia to Offer Its Chips in the New Cray Desktop
After more than two years of pushing its scientific computing efforts, Nvidia’s graphics processors will be offered as an option in the newest line of Cray desktop supercomputers. The chipmaker plans to announce next week that its Tesla chips can be used in the $25,00 Cray desktop supercomputer, according to Nvidia spokesperson Andrew Humber. He said Nvidia has been in talks with Cray ever since the chipmaker announced its Tesla line of graphics processors in 2007, but that this is the f...
Apple to Sony & Nintendo: Let the Games Begin
Steve Jobs, as he was launching the latest version of Apple’s iPod, declared war on game console makers Sony and Nintendo. “It’s the best portable device for playing games,” Jobs said of the new iPod touch. Using the touch and the iPhone, Apple hopes to do battle with the Nintendo DS and PSP. But it’s a battle they will likely lose, for two reasons: One, the hardware isn’t optimized for gaming, no matter what Jobs says; and two, Apple lacks any killer apps wh...
Invent, Baby, Invent
Tom Friedman says we ought to be chanting "Invent, Baby, Invent" rather than "Drill, Baby, Drill". Forget that this is a false dichotomy (or read this post), invention IS a good idea. I’ve spent most of my career inventing both technology and business models - successfully and unsuccessfully, have a handful of patents, better stuff I was too dumb to patent, and an interesting career and comfortable life to show for it so am all in favor of innovation. Unfortunately neit...
PIKA WARP Appliance adopted by Schmooze
Today, as I’m blogging from the ITEXPO press room I learned that the PIKA WARP Appliance has been adopted by Schmooze (aka the Yiddish Asterisk ). If you recall, I reviewed the PIKA WARP Appliance last week. The WARP Appliance can run Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, and now Schmooze. Schmooze Communications will be using PIKA WARP the Appliance as the hardware component in a new line of its PBXact business telephone systems. We Need Platform Plays That Don’t Wobble
An item in the NY Times’ Bits blog today details the capricious state of the rules that may or may not affect iPhone application developers. The post focuses, in particular, on the fate of a software that allows you to download podcasts and stream them over a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Apple decided not to sell the software in the App Store, telling the developer that iTunes already offered that functionality. The post argues that iTunes does not, in fact, offer it. But it’s more...
OneWebDay in Amsterdam
September 22 is OneWebDay around the world, including Amsterdam. I’ll be arriving Amsterdam from the US on September 22 around mid-day, and I’d love to meet any and all Amsterdam netheads to celebrate that afternoon or early evening. [I’m coming to Amsterdam for Picnic08 and for Cisco’s Connected Urban Development meeting.] I’ll be contacting other NL-based netheads and also the folks arriving for Picnic. It’d be great to get a group together in a nice spot ...

I’m a Microblogging Tramp
After seeing a bullish review yesterday on Mashable, I immediately signed up for a Fidj.it account. You know about Fidj.it, right? It’s apparently the latest and greatest micro-blogging service to hit the scene since…well, Yammer…and Mixin and Identi.ca and Plurk and Jaiku and Pownce and Twitter. Like any micro-blogging junkie, I’ve signed up for all of them in the event one of them becomes the next Twitter. Yup, I’ve secured the username “markevans” fo...
GigaOM Interview: Bill Hambrecht, Legendary Silicon Valley Banker
Last night I watched with morbid fascination as a group of talking heads on CNBC discussed the fall (and subsequent bankruptcy) of Lehman Brothers, the 158-year-old firm that survived the Great Depression, two world wars, and a devastating attack on the American way of life. Yet the investment back could not survive greed, nor its enslavement to the quarterly earnings cycle. Neither could Merrill Lynch, which agreed to sell itself to Bank of America, nor insurance giant AIG, which was scramblin...

SightSpeed today announced that its video and voice communications software is now available on Linux-based “netbook” (mini-notebook) PCs. Dell Video Chat powered by SightSpeed will come pre-installed on the Linux build of Dell’s newly-launched Inspiron Mini 9 device. Dell Video Chat, Windows version, is also pre-installed on the Windows XP version of the Mini 9. SightSpeed works on Macs, Windows, and now Linux and it is currently the the only multi-party video software t...
Mobile Broadband – A New Revolution?
In December 1994, I was managing the new product development process for a long-distance carrier. We were in the midst of being acquired, with the new combined company becoming a credible threat to the Big Three. My soon-to-be CEO asked for a review of the product development pipeline, about a third of which was Internet related. His response? “That Internet stuff –- shut it down. The Internet’s a toy, businesses will never pay for it. Shut it down.” I lead with this story for two...
What Do You Think About Mobile Internet Devices?
In the run-up to Mobilize, we are working with Dr. Phil Hendrix of IMMR, a small and high-caliber group of academic consultants out of Atlanta, to bring you a poll in which we would love your participation. It’s goal is to get your opinion about the future of “mobile Internet devices” — that growing sector between phones/PDA’s and Laptops. Your opinions could help shape the evolution of the technology. The results from the poll will be presented on GigaOM and at th...
4G: Forget Cell Towers, Bring on the Femtocells
Will personal cell towers replace the giant monstrosities currently sitting on rooftops and beside highways? Manish Singh, a VP with Continuous Computing, says that may be the case with the 4G buildout. He spoke with me about the company’s new line of software and hardware for carriers deploying LTE networks, noting that those in North America and Europe are asking whether they should deploy citywide — or one consumer at a time, using femtocells. He said two things are driving this...
Going Green with My Gadgets
We all love our gadgets — some more than others – but all of those TVs, computers, mobile phones and DVD players suck up energy and end up clogging landfills. How can you stay plugged in while minimizing the effect on the environment? Take a look at MyGreenElectronics.com, a website launched last year by the Consumer Electronics Association. The site offers lists of low-energy-use electronic products, tips on how to limit energy consumption by the electronics you own and advice...
Well-Traveled Angels Back Dopplr Again
Dopplr, a travel-focused social network based in Helsinki, has raised an undisclosed amount of money from an investor group led by well-known technology industry insider, Esther Dyson. It was an all-angel round of funding, something we’ve discussed on our FoundRead channel. Apart from Dyson, other investors in the company include Xing founder Lars Hinrichs and De.lici.ous founder Joshua Schachter. Saul Klein, formerly of Skype and currently with Index Partners and Seedcamp, invested agai...
What’s Not Hot in Japan? Try iPhone
It may come as surprise to all of us here, but iPhone sales are not cutting it in Japan. Apple’s partnership with Japan’s third-largest mobile operator, Softbank Corp., to sell the iPhone 3G certainly created a buzz. Like elsewhere, Japanese consumers lined up at stores in advance of the phone’s release on July 11, and many locations sold out almost immediately. But now analysts estimate that demand in Japan has fallen to a third of what it was initially, and analysts are n...
