SanDisk Goes 32GB Flash for Photo/Video Pros
SanDisk has introduced a 32-GB CompactFlash card, the company’s largest CF storage device for professional digital photographers and videographers. The latest Extreme III CompactFlash is twice the size of SanDisk’s previous largest product. The new card has read and write speeds of 30 MBps. The higher-capacity card is aimed at people who use Hi-Def camcorders, enabling users to store as much as 80 minutes of 100 MBps, 10-bit, 4:2:2 HD video, which is of sufficient quality for today...
Cable Group Doesn’t Want to Free the Airwaves
The National Cable and Telecommunications Association has joined wireless microphone companies and the National Association of Broadcasters in poo-pooing Google’s hope of using the white spaces between digital television stations for wireless broadband. The association filed its objection with the FCC on Wednesday, claiming that white-space devices that have already been tested caused interference with cable channels, which, unlike broadcast channels, don’t have a white space signa...
Google Shops for Blogging Tools in Korea
From left to right: Chester Roh, Chang Kim, and author Joyce Kim. Photo by Joyce Kim. Google has acquired South Korea’s TNC, maker of the open-source blogging and publishing platform Textcube, co-CEO Chang Kim said on his personal blog today. I met with the TNC team back in March, when I was visiting Seoul. I liked the company so much that I talked about it on an episode of The GigaOM Show and wrote about Textcube on my own blog. Everything I saw during the demo TNC gave made me want ...
Newber
FreedomVoice unvieled Newber at CTIA. It is the beta version of the first location-aware business number. Newber Beta is an application that resides in the iPhone as a fully functional second line and uses positioning technology to locate and seamlessly transfer calls to nearby landlines, even during an in-progress call. Newber Beta delivers an independent number that can be assigned to any phone, sparing the caller the task of dialing multiple numbers for mobile, home, work, etc. Newber Beta a...
Huh?
I definitely get that Microsoft is looking to re-brand itself with a $300-million advertising campaign. I kind of get that Microsoft hired Jerry Seinfeld to jump-start it. I sort of get they’re paying him $10-million. I do not get the videos featuring Seinfield and Bill Gates, particularly this one. That said, I do find them funny, especially Gates, who may have found a new post-Microsoft career. I’d like to get it but I can’t. Am I missing something? TechCrunchh has questions ...
My Second Social Media Birthday
Yes, today is my birthday. And today I am experiencing my second “Social Media Birthday.” Growing up, I was someone who celebrated birthdays. I believed that birthdays mattered. (I still do.) And whenever I knew it was someones birthday I would wish that person a Happy Birthday. As I got older I ran into people who didnt celebrate birthdays and after a while I just got used to that. But in my mind, birthdays were always a special day and a chance to catch up with some of th...
Live Streaming Video via Mobile Phone Camera
Well, thought I’d do a live streaming test from my Windows Mobile 6.1 XV6700 mobile phone in preparation for Internet Telephony Expo (ITEXPO) next week. I plan on live streaming portions of the show, which you’ll be able to watch via my blog. I may do some video interviews as well. This streaming video test will last until at least 11am. Quicktime version: ” id=”WebcastEmbed_tbEmbedQT” disabled=”disabled” style=”width: 4790; height: 172R...
Are Conferences Boring?
Blogging is a bit light this week, for reasons I cannot say. However, Andy Abramson had a post from yesterday that caught my eye, and is rather timely with TMC’s IT Expo coming next week. His post is titled “Trade Shows are Boring”, and reflects his ennui with CTIA, which he attended this week. Bascially, he’s saying the show was pretty dull and was in sharp contrast to the energy he felt at DEMO, and likely would have had at TechCrunch 50. Andy gets to way more events th...
Spam Filter: Debt More Important Than Sex
Mary was actually the first to spot this trend. Used to be that my spam filter was full of offers to enlarge my body parts, even those I’d rather not enlarge. Second hottest category was offers of medicine to help me make the best of the body parts I have. Then some opportunities to meet girls. Assuming that spammers have their finger on the pulse of America, we seem now to be much more worried about debt than sex. var OutbrainPermaLink=’http://blog.tomevslin.com/20...
Om Interviews Skype CEO
Om Malik has a video interview with Skype CEO Josh Silverman. Om asks about Skype on the Apple iPhone to which the Skype CEO simply says “Stay tuned…” Om presses some more, but is unable to get him to crack. Ah well. While we wait for the Skype gurus to get an official Skype client for the iPhone, at least we have some workarounds to get Skype running on the iPhone. Court Says Police Can’t Track You Via Cell Phone
The Justice Department this week lost an appeal that would have allowed the government to use cell phone data to track your location without having probable cause. A judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania ruled that such tracking could violate the Fourth Amendment against unreasonable search and seizure (yeah, there’s a reason you learn about these documents in school), and said law enforcement officials need to show probable cause before getting access ...
Josh talks with Om
Om Malik wrote up his interview with Skype CEO Josh Silverman today. Here’s his 19 minute interview. Factoids: 6% of all international calling minutes. $136 million revenue last quarter. What follows is a very rough and partial transcript of the first half of the interview, starting after generic introductions. Spelling, typos, omissions, and other errors are all mine. Corrections and additions welcome. Om: eBay Synergy? Josh: "Our mission is enabling the world’s c...

Happy 50th Birthday, Dear Microchip
When it comes to all the gadget-y things that now fill up our world — from computers to mobile phones — we should thank Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce, the inventors of the integrated circuit. Fifty years ago today, while all of his colleagues were on vacation, Kilby wired a few transistors on a piece of silicon and created the first microchip. That’s the story we hear in Texas, where Kilby spent his career at Texas Instruments, although Robert Noyce, the co-founder of Intel and ...
PIKA WARP Appliance for Asterisk Review
There is no doubt that open source Asterisk has taken IP telephony by storm resulting in many vendors offering solutions based on Asterisk. Because the “free” Asterisk software is open source, it has helped drive down the cost of installing an IP-PBX. Only one major cost factor remains - the hardware. If you install Asterisk on a traditional PC, you have several hardware components - the motherboard, the CPU, the memory, the hard drive, the power supply, CD/DVD drive, etc. Some of ...

3CX now present in Australia!
Now I have an excuse to go to Australia :-). Seriously, I am pleased to announce that we have now opened our very own office in Australia. The ASIAPAC Office will help build out our presence in Australia and New Zealand but also work the whole Asian market, where I see a lot of potential for 3CX. Its also nice to be ‘re-united’ with Richard Rundle, a former workmate who will be heading the ...
Web-based Carpooling Startups Woo the Enterprise Market
As gas prices have soared, more commuters have made the switch to carpooling, and they’re turning to a host of free web-based services – from government-sponsored transit programs to iPhone apps and widgets — to meet their needs. But the plethora of options can be a mixed blessing: More options mean your perfect carpool match is more likely to be signed up with a different service. That’s not only a problem for you, the commuter, but also for the companies hoping to ca...
Join JamLegend: 1,000 Beta Invites For GigaOM Readers
JamLegend is easily the coolest still-in-beta game I’ve played in recent weeks, and after some nagging on my part, the developers just sent me a 1,000 beta invites so GigaOM readers can try it out, too. Use this link to create an account. The three founders recently stopped by Pier 38 to give me an advance look. Backed by LaunchBox Digital, JamLegend combines several disparate game/Web 2.0 elements into a coherent whole that’s instantly appealing: Think Guitar Hero meets Last.fm m...
Movie Rentals? Try a DVD Kiosk Near You
DVD-rental kiosks are popping up everywhere, from grocery stores to gas stations and at just about every McDonald’s in between. The trend is expected to be a lucrative one, too: Adams Media Research predicts that there will be about 24,000 DVD-rental kiosks by 2010 and that they’ll bring in approximately $760 million in revenue. Now you know why Blockbuster stores across the country are shrinking and Netflix is feeling the heat, too. When you say “I want my DVD,” what d...
Where is My Skype on iPhone?
Do You Want Skype on Your iPhone? Oh god yes… I can’t wait. Not Really. In this era of flat rate plans from mobile companies, does anyone need Skype? That’s exactly the question I asked Skye CEO Josh Silverman when he stopped by our office earlier today. “Stay tuned” is all he would say. I tried to ask the question many different times, but he stuck to the standard line. However, he did acknowledge that Skype is very serious about...
Truly Ubiquitous Broadband is Getting Closer
Elektrobit is showing off its reference design for a multimode 3G and satellite handset phone at the CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment show this week in San Francisco, and it’s a far cry from the clunky satellite phones of yore. It first unveiled the phone in April, during the larger CTIA Wireless show. At that time Elektrobit said TerreStar, a network that plans to operate a combined terrestrial and satellite network, would use the phone, but since Terrestar was experiencing financial...
Digital TV Transition Already Has Hiccups
Earlier this week, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin flipped an oversize, symbolic switch in Wilmington, NC, to celebrate the city’s early transition to all-digital TV signals. The first! And guess what, by later that day, the FCC had already fielded several hundred calls from local residents who weren’t able to watch TV. All of which did not seem to surprise Martin: “I’m sure we’re still going to hear from people who werenR...
