Mobilica Aims to Make the Mobile Internet More Fun
Mobile Internet adoption is still rather slow. According to Forrester Research, only 21 percent of U.S. adult mobile phone owners use the mobile Internet, and only 7 percent do so at least once a week. One of the main reasons for this is that browsing the Internet through a mobile phone is kind of like eating soup with a fork – that is, using the wrong instrument to get the job done. To provide an adequate mobile Internet browsing experience, it’s not enough to shrink the web pag...
VLAB Event — Lifestreaming: The Real-Time Web
As the consumer web evolves, so does the trend of immediately sharing of everything about our lives, online. The tools that let us broadcast our lives in real time are radically changing the way we keep in touch with people we know — and even those we don’t. To get a chance to hear from leading companies in this space, and learn what thought leaders like Google and AOL see as the future of the consumer web, check out our media partner MIT/Stanford Venture Lab’s event, “Lifes...
DEMO: For Entrepreneurs, Some Guidance
Given that IPOs are hard to come by these day, VCs are spending more time focusing on strategic buyers, according to Eric Tilenius, a newly minted partner at Maveron Venture, who spoke at the DEMO conference in San Diego on Tuesday. That, of course, changes the way venture firms evaluate startups, looking for technologies that might be of interest to a large number of acquirers, rather than a business that can achieve a market cap of $500 million on Wall Street. It also could lower valuations f...
Two Things Apple Didn’t Talk About Today
Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced today that NBC shows will once again be available on iTunes, and HD versions of TV shows will be available for $2.99. But there were two things that, notably, he didn’t talk about: One, what, exactly, prompted the return of peacock programming, and two, whether or not there will ever be TV show rentals. As Chris Albrecht notes, however, the HD TV shows looked pretty spectacular running on the demo Mac, And the new Nano, with the elongated screen for video,...
Google’s Eric Schmidt Details Energy Plan
Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, along with Google’s energy gurus Dan Reicher and Bill Weihl, have so far served as the search giant’s most outspoken representatives of its plans to create new energy solutions. But at a dinner for the Corporate EcoForum on Monday night, in a speech reminiscent of the calls for action put out by former Vice-President Al Gore and former Intel Chairman Andy Grove, Google CEO Eric Schmidt outlined his own plan to wean the U.S. off of foreign oil,...
e-Sitting in Nerdville
We never did see Baby Jack during our early morning stint of e-sitting. Son-in-law Hugh had to catch the 6AM flight from Burlington to get to a conference (been there, done that). He, Kate, and Jack stayed at Nerdville summer headquarters because it’s relatively near the airport. Kate had to drive Hugh there early enough for security etc. “Don’t wake Jack up,” we (Mary) said. “We’ll watch him.” “OK,” Kate said after just a little persuas...
Finally Some Good News about Notebook Batteries!
Seems like every blog about notebook computers and batteries is bad news — recalls, fires and the like. Well, how about some good news for a change! Hewlett-Packard (HP) will reportedly release a notebook next month that can run for to 24 hours using a high-capacity battery — but only if it’s running Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system. The long-lasting notebook will be a special configuration of the 6930p, part of HP’s EliteBook line. The allure of a battery th...
A Look Back at Jerusalem ROCKS - One Year Ago Today
Jerusalem ROCKS took place a year ago today at the Sultan’s Pool in Jerusalem. This happened after 18 months of planning and envisioning a dream together with my friends Jacob Ner David and Carmi Wurtman. Reality hit the moment Hadag Nachash took the stage together with D.A.M. This was followed by The Commitments, Yehudah Katz and Hanan Elias from Reva Lesheva, Arrested Development and the Black Eyed Peas. This was the biggest musical event the City of Jerusalem had seen in over 20 years ...
In Online Privacy Fight, Google Blinks
Last night Google said it would cut the amount of time it saves its search engine inquiries from 18 months to nine months. Actually, what its doing is anonymizing the data after nine months rather than 18, which is has been compelled to do after EU and U.S. reglators turned greater attention to the lack of privacy on the web. The negative publicity and government scrutiny drawn by deep packet inspection firms NebuAd and Phorm working with ISPs to mine your web surfing habits for profit, was tar...
Is the iPhone the Next Ad Frontier?
The iPhone Apps Store is turning out to be a hit not just for Apple, but for the dozens of others who have been selling their apps on the store. Those that have been giving away their applications for free are doing even better. And now they have a way to monetize their apps. Today, a whole gaggle of free ad-supported applications are making their debut, thanks in part to AdMob, a mobile advertising startup based in San Mateo, Calif. The company has signed up brand-name advertisers such as Her...
Google invests in Satellite Broadband Startup
Google is one of the many investors who have invested $60 million in O3b Networks, a St. John, Jersey, Channel Islands-based start-up that is looking to offer Internet services in the emerging world, especially area that are far away from the sub-sea networks and major backbones. Apart from Google, other investors include, HSBC Holdings, Allen & Company, and Liberty Global according to the Wall Street Journal. It is not clear how much money Google invested in this company. In a press releas...
TechCrunch50/DEMO: Beta Bonanza!
If you think about it, this whole Web 2.0 is like being a kid in a candy store….where you can try everything and not have to pay for anything. With wave after wave of Web startups being developed and launched, you could beta yourself from day to night. Who cares if many of them are entering market chock-a-block with competition or whether few of them have viable business plans. Many of them are just digital candy that you taste and then quickly on to the next digital treat. For anyone hun...
Best Use of the Internet
Right now, I find that besides blogging, email and research, the best use of the Internet right now is Hurricane tracking. Related Entries TrackBacks | Comments | Tag with del.icio.us | On Rad’s Radar? Home | Permalink: Best Use of the Internet Copyright On Rad’s Radar? ...
Microsoft launches free Hyper V server based on windows 2008 core
Microsoft just announced that it has made Hyper V server available for free download. To be clear, we are not talking about the Hyper V that is bundled in Windows 2008, but a separate, stand alone ‘distribution’ of Windows 2008 core and Hyper V. The host license itself is free, but of course any copies of Windows that you run virtually on the machine must be licensed. This makes Hyper V server ...
Yammering about Tweet
I don’t get the whole Twitter thing. Maybe its the folks I am connected to. Most just puke all day. By puke, I mean they just spray out stuff that is usually inconsequential. And most of the time when you reply to someone on twitter, nothing happens. (Again ot could just be my flock of followers). The most use I get from twitter is weather updates from 2 sources (especially living in Florida on the Gulf Coast). One thing that I may try is Tweetburner to see who actually reads my twit...
First Blog of the Day on Apple’s Announcement
Couldn’t resist with all that will be written about what Apple is planning to announce today … but here’s the first blog of the day on it. Will it be large, small, grand or tall? The wait is over! We will be sure to know all later today! Tele-Presence versus Video Conferencing
Andy Abramson writes about how video conferencing from a client company like SightSpeed is better than Cisco’s Tele-Presence. On Sept. 22, Brian Carroll is having a tele-seminar on “Email vs. Phone vs. In-Person Meeting”. Keith Rosen, a respected sales coach, would tell you that, especially in today’s economic climate, nothing beats a face-to-face or a phone call. Keith writes about how Sales 2.0 is diluting inter-personal communications. (If you have ever received an ema...
DEMO: Bringing Micropayments to User-Generated Content
As a business journalist, I have to confess that I love it when money starts changing hands. I can get excited about all sorts of new and upcoming technology, but until people can find ways to create real value and get paid, it’s kind of hard to take seriously, like the 25-year-old married to your 60-year-old boss. So that’s why two startups launching at DEMO caught my eye. Photrade is a platform on which photographers can post pics and track their use across the web. As part of tha...
Enterprise Software Steals the Show at TechCrunch50
I’m over at TechCrunch50, where the morning was slow and buggy but things just livened up fantastically with, believe it or not, the enterprise software panel. Seriously, it was awesome. As judges, Marc Andreessen, Marc Benioff and Yossi Vardi were not only incisive but absolutely hilarious. And the presenting companies looked good. “It’s amazing how a conference can turn on a dime,” said Kent Goldman, principal at First Round Capital, sitting next to me in the second ro...
