Is the Cloud Right for You? Ask Yourself These 5 Questions
Is cloud computing right for you? For the fledgling startup, the appeal of the cloud is obvious. Given how easily an entrepreneur’s vision can be stymied by a lack of technical and operations expertise, leveraging an Amazon EC2 or Google App Engine could provide the only viable option. But what about large enterprises that not only have an in-house technical staff to do their bidding, but existing data centers and deep pockets? Stacey has already identified issues with some cloud provider...

I I’ve had the good fortune to give the Jaybird JB-100 Bluetooth Stereo Headset a workout, and it’s been a good time. Now the JB-200 supersedes the groundbreaking JB-100 — which boldly presented a new design in this field. The JB-200 offers the same great design, but now with: More control of music, with complete AVRCP Music and Call Controls Improved fit, with 25% narrower ear-tip Sound isolation, with 50% longer sound-isolating ear-tips Greater comfort, with higher grad...
ClueCon + Ad:Tech Chicago = Busy Week
It was a busy week for all of us at IfByPhone last week, but no one was busier than our CEO, Irv Shapiro. We had a booth at Ad:Tech Chicago last week and were able to meet hundreds of interesting people. Additionally, Irv gave a speech focusing on how our applications and technology relate to marketing and advertising campaigns in today’s landscape. The people who stopped by the booth were amazed that we can instantly provision toll free numbers and that we have no setup fees. Our Ca...
How Many Ports Does a Set-Top Box Need?
Following a petition filed with the Federal Communications Commission by Intel and Verizon requesting that Ethernet ports be required on the backs of set-top boxes, the National Cable and Telecommunications Association have come out in favor of an open standard such as Ethernet (or even better, the tru2way standard developed by the cable companies) but against any sort of federal mandates. The trade group filed an ex parte filing with the FCC last night in which it argued that industry groups c...

eComm 2009 Planning and Advisory Board Under Way
The date for eComm 2009 has now been set, and will be March 3-5, returning to the same venue in San Jose. The event is very much a work in progress, so there’s not much more to share publicly, but as that changes, I’ll keep you posted. There was a ton of great content at the inaugural eComm, and Lee Dryburgh has labored long and hard to share as much of it as possible on the eComm website, and I urge you to spend some time on the eComm blog to see what you missed. I’ve been ask...
Can Nvidia Play with the Big Boys?
Despite reporting a second-quarter loss last night, due in part to costs associated with the faulty packaging on some of its chips placed in thousands of laptops, Nvidia still has a plan for semiconductor domination through the GPU. But if it wants to execute, it needs to accept the realities that come with stepping into a competitive market. The earnings call shows Nvidia still has a lot to learn. In yesterday evening’s call, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang admitted to a $196 million charge because o...
Krusell’s Getting the Picture: Camera Cases Coming
If you make cases for mobile phones, then why not make cases for cameras? At least that’s what Krusell may have been thinking with the announcement that they will roll out their first line of camera cases next month at the huge Photokina trade show in Germany. If they are anything as interesting and practical as the existing product line, they will be sure to attract attention. And will there be a monthly list of best selling cameras based on case sales? www.krusell.se Tags: case...
August 31st is BlogDay
BlogDay was started by Nir Ofir in 2005 with the belief that bloggers should have one day dedicated to getting to know other bloggers from other countries, cultures and areas of interest. I celebrated BlogDay in 2007 and I look forward in joining the celebration again in 2008. What will happen on BlogDay? On August 31st, bloggers are asked to post recommendations of 5 new Blogs, preferably Blogs that are different from their own culture, point of view and attitude. On this day, blog readers wi...
More Competition but Google Still Dominates
Somewhat lost within all the buzz about new search engines such as Cuil, SearchMe and PowerSet is that Google’s dominance of the search market continues to grow. According to HitWise, Google accounted for 70.77% of U.S. searches in July, compared with Yahoo (18.6%), MSN Search (5.4%) and Ask (3.5%). The reality is simple: a lot of people like Google a lot. (How’s that for insight?!) But a more intriguing question is what’s it going to take for Google to lose market share? Clear...
Thoughts on VoIP
I wrote an article for a new Web site called VoIP Services looking at some of the challenges facing VoIP service providers. As some of you may recall, this blog’s original focus was VoIP (back when Vonage was all the rage!) so it’s like old times. Technorati Tags: Vonage ...
Teleflip Has Flipped For Good
Teleflip, a Los Angeles-based start-up that allowed you to send SMS messages to one and all has flipped for the final time, according to an email sent by the company to its customers. Teleflip Tony David wrote: We’ve gone as far as we can with our financial resources, and the piggy bank is empty. Effective Friday, August 15, 2008, at 9:00AM Pacific Daylight Time, Flipmail will no longer be operating for either public or private use, and will be turned off at that time. We are sorry for an...
Can Online Video Support Its Next Generation?
Hayden Black is nice, funny, quotable and makes two critically acclaimed and modestly popular web shows. He may not have a face for television, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming the poster boy for a market of online video producers that has a growing crowd of early-stage startups looking to meet its needs. Black, who has never signed an exclusive deal and whose shows — Goodnight Burbank and Abigail’s Teen Diary — are distributed on some 15 different hosting sites...
FastSoft Tweaks TCP to Speed the Internet
Dr. Steven Low, a professor at the California Institute of Technology, has spent much of his life studying transmission communication control protocol (TCP), a technology that allows us to send emails, watch online videos and make Skype calls. TCP essentially makes the Internet (as we know it) work. Through his work, part of a larger effort at the university, it was concluded that TCP, which came into existence in 1981, needed to be replaced by a more updated technology, one that could handle t...

Why We Need Fat Pipes: The Top 5 Bandwidth-Hungry Apps
Unless you’re actively seeding torrent files or dream of one day having HD content streamed from the web to your TV, the debate over managing networks can seem hopelessly abstract. To help the rest of us understand why fast networks with a lot of capacity are so important, I asked networking giant Cisco for what it considers to be the top five bandwidth-hungry applications. Cisco mined the data it gathered for its visual networking index and came up with the top five in the consumer, bus...
LCD Still Moving, but Is a Slowdown Ahead?
LCD TV sales grew 25% quarter-to-quarter in Q2, according to Quixel Research in its LCD TV Market Review. The growth was attributed to the availability of more screen sizes with less emphasis on 1080p models. While unit sales for the 32-inch and 40- to 42-inch screen size segments were up 22% and 26%, respectively, the new 19W and 22W models launched in the second quarter showed the most dramatic growth. Unit sales for the 19W segment increased 121% quarter-to-quarter, while the 22W...
