I Always Feel Like My ISP’s Watching Me
Today the FCC took issue with how Comcast managed its network, essentially it looked at the packets and blocked or throttled those related to peer-to-peer applications on the upload side. If you thought warrantless wiretapping was intrusive, think about all the information you send and receive via data packets. We’ve tracked a lot of these rather disheartening developments in previous posts, but after Google declared privacy a mythical construct, we thought we’d drive it home. Here ...
twittersport: Thinking about a weekend of 10,000 Conversations, Maybe More.
Growing up as a Ham Radio operator, one of the activities I enjoyed taking part in is something known as Radiosport. (per Wikipedia: the most common use of the term radiosport is as a synonym for Amateur Radio Contesting. Contesting is an activity where amateur radio stations attempt to make as many two-way contacts with other stations as possible, following certain defined parameters of the competition, to maximize a score. ) As twitter has become my default communication channel these...
Mobilize Startup Launchpad: Do You Have the Right (Mobile) Stuff?
Are you running a mobile startup, or know someone who is, that has (with a nod to Tom Wolfe) “The Right Stuff”? GigaOM is looking for the emerging technologies — and the companies behind them — upon which the new era of the mobile web will be built. So at our upcoming Mobilize conference on Sept. 18, we will have a startup “launchpad,” where 12 of the most promising mobile web startups will get to strut their stuff. If you think your startup, or the startup o...
MacBook Conundrum
So, I have to get a new MacBook. But what to do, what to do? Do I simply buy a new MB, and take advantage of the free iPod Touch (8GB) promotion? Or do I pony up for a MB Pro? Or, should I wait for the new MBs coming out in a few months that are rumoured to be more curvy and come with a fancy-dancy trackpad? Decisions, decisions! As much as the idea of a free Touch is appealing, it’s hard not to get the feeling that Apple is just trying to blow out its MB inventory for the new and improv...
Bill Gates Trash Talks Bill Gates
Bill Gates has so much money that pieces of his empire of investments are in conflict — over trash hauling. So like any emperor, he’s mediating a hostile takeover battle in the form of an unwanted attempt to snag Republic Services by Waste Management, the king of trash hauling, and of which Gates’ personal retirement fund owns 2.3 percent. Funny thing is, Gates’ Cascade Investment also owns a 15 percent stake in Republic. What does Bill want? It seems to be a bigger payout from...
Where’s Om Today? Pier Screenings Sizzled
It has been an exhausting two weeks. First there was the Brainstorm Tech Conference down in Half Moon Bay, then a panel discussion at the MobileBeat conference, followed by a pit stop to the TechCrunch Party (see photo), a visit to the Microsoft Campus up in Redmond on Monday, and quick visits with some startups down in Silicon Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday. It ended yesterday with our first NewTeeVee Pier Screenings of 2008. What a fun event it was — from the video selections to the po...
FCC Punts on Network Neutrality
As expected, the Federal Communications Commission has voted to chastise Comcast for its network management practices, with two commissioners of the five dissenting. Unfortunately, the FCC has decided not to make a formal rule regarding network management practices and has instead decided to adjudicate the issue and move forward with Network Neutrality problems on a case-by-case basis. Comparing the Comcast issue to rural telephone company Madison River Telecommunications blocking voice-over-I...
Bucky Fuller - The Things to Do:
The Things to do are: the things that need doing, that you see need to be done, and that no one else seems to see need to be done. Then you will conceive your own way of doing that which needs to be done that no one else has told you to do or how to do it. This will bring out the real you that often gets buried inside a character that has acquired a superficial array of behaviors induced or imposed by others on the individual. - Bucky Fuller Tags: Entrepreneurship, leadership, Entreprene...
Will VCs Reap the Cleantech Seed Deals They Sow?
Earlier this week, 35 venture capitalists wandered the halls of the National Renewable Energy Lab in Colorado. They were attending a conference focused on commercializing the clean technology that comes out of national labs, learning how to scope out the taxpayer-funded research that may one day become the next hot battery or solar IPO. But given the amount of time it takes to bring research from the lab to the stock market, they’d better be prepared to wait. When it comes to scouting for...
Even IBM’s Got Computing Clouds
It looks like after Amazon, a mere book retailer, showed them the way, all the technology powerhouses have fallen in love with cloud computing. Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Yahoo earlier this week said they’ve teamed up with three universities to create a cloud computing testbed, and Michael Dell talked about his company’s cloud computing plans with me in a recent interview as well. Perhaps that’s why it came as no surprise when Big Blue sent over a press release outlining their pla...

Mac Clone Maker in Trouble — Did You Even Know about Mac Clones?
The Miami-based Macintosh clone maker that was sued by Apple Inc. earlier this month has retained a law firm that has beaten Apple in the past, court documents show. Apple has charged Psystar with multiple counts of violating copyright, trademark, breach-of-contract and unfair-competition laws by installing Mac OS X 10.5 on Intel-based computers that it has sold since April. According to the lawsuit, Psystar violated the Mac OS X end-user licensing agreement (EULA) when it installed Leopard on ...
It’s 2018: Who Owns the Cloud?
In 10 years, which company will own the cloud computing space? That question has been the subject of long and contentious funding debates over the past year, especially here on Sand Hill Road. And while I know that predicting the future is an inaccurate science, I think that when it comes to evaluating this nascent industry, the VC community has been focusing on the wrong criteria. Today, cloud computing offerings are application-specific frameworks that are run by companies both large and smal...
Looks Like 1080p is Coming
Now it looks like Dish Network will be giving us true 1080p HD! In its press release, the company says that in addition to a host of 17 new national high-definition channels, it will also offer pay-per-view movies in 1080p. The first, available on Friday, is I Am Legend, the Will Smith sci-fi film. While the satellite company may be the first to sell 1080p content, they’re not the first to announce it. Those honors go to DirecTV; on Monday the company said it would launch an additional ...
